starting a restoration

Back in the shop today after a long holiday. Working on the second set of windows for Rutledge Presbyterian. Today I am cleaning each piece of glass that I saved when I tore the windows apart from the old lead. Doing this is pretty much just like it sounds….I cut away the old lead, which is fairly easy when restoring an old window, because over time lead oxidizes and breaks down and by the time I get my hands on it, it is plyable and pretty much falls apart. I use soapy water and soak the glass pieces, cleaning them one by one. This window had a lot of breakage. Once the glass pieces are cleaned I lay the crayon rubbing out and lay the pieces on top of it. This shows me what new pieces I will have to cut and gives me an idea of how “off” the rubbing may be. I had the broken glass matched, so I will be able to cut new glass that will look as close as possible to the original pieces.
